Simon Joinson has a nice article at DPreview about a few related topics:

  1. Why are point-and-shoots so noisy at high (or moderate) ISOs?
  2. What are manufacturers doing to get around this? (hint: One part R&D, nine parts deceptive marketing)
  3. Given this, which compact digital cameras work least bad at high ISOs?

There are few people who've tried as many different digital cameras as Simon, so it's worth a read.
