Faking Soft Window Light

Yesterday, I had to do a five-minute portrait for a profile piece. No time to prepare, she was already in the office when I was given the assignment. We found an open spot in the library with some clean lines and some nice windows. Soft window light would be perfect.
But there was one problem. These windows were facing right into the sun, and the light was glaring. So I set up a lightstand on the ledge, opened my umbrella and had her stand in the shadows. Now the main light was shot through a white umbrella with a SN-800 on a PocketWizard. Nice, soft, clean. A fast shutter speed brought the windows into dynamic range.
