Trick of the Light

Trick of the Light

It's been a heck of a week -- I've had to shoot two major publications in three days. The entire publications. A lot of the assignments can be summed up by this one.

"OK, so we have a screenshot, but we need to make it look cool. Could you take a cool shot of a computer showing it?"

"Sure, how much time do I have?"

"We need it in about 10 minutes."

My solution was to find an old studio (one of the few rooms in here with no ambient light, set the computer on a table near the chalkboard and turn out the lights. I wanted a splash of light in the background, but I couldn't sync it wirelessly or I'd get a pre-flash that would show up in the exposure. So I set the camera on a very long exposure, ran around the left side to fire the flash through a handy plant, making an interesting pattern, and then traced along the keyboard with an old (and thus very warm-colored) flashlight.

The screenshot was superimposed in post, but otherwise no Photoshop.
